IELTS Writing practice — FAQ

Is ieltswrites free?
Yes. Practising IELTS Writing in the simulator is completely free. Verified accounts also get a free AI scoring credit, and extra AI scoring is low-cost.
Is it the same as the real IELTS computer-delivered test?
Yes. The screen is a 1:1 replica of the computer-based IELTS Writing test — question on the left, answer box on the right, a live word count and a timer.
How does the AI scoring work?
When you finish, the AI gives an overall band and sub-scores for Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range & Accuracy, plus line-by-line feedback, corrections, synonyms and high-band vocabulary.
Can I practise both Task 1 and Task 2?
Yes — both IELTS Academic and General Training, Task 1 and Task 2, including genuine Cambridge IELTS past questions (C10–C21).
Can I score my own essay?
Yes. You can paste any question and essay to get an AI band score and corrections, even if you did not write it in the simulator.
How accurate is the AI band score?
It is an estimate, not an official IELTS result. The AI marks your essay against the public IELTS Writing band descriptors on all four criteria and explains every deduction, so you can see exactly what to fix. Use it to track progress between practice tests; only an IELTS examiner can award an official band.
What is different about the computer-delivered IELTS Writing test?
The tasks, timing and marking are the same as the paper test. The difference is that you type: there is an on-screen word counter and you can copy and paste, but there is no spell check or grammar check — so practising on a realistic screen matters.
How many words and how much time do I need for Task 1 and Task 2?
You have 60 minutes for both tasks. Task 1 needs at least 150 words (about 20 minutes) and Task 2 at least 250 words (about 40 minutes). Task 2 counts for twice as much as Task 1 in your Writing band.
