AI IELTS Writing Checker: Band Score and Line-by-Line Corrections
Updated 2026-10-31
ieltswrites is an AI IELTS Writing checker. Paste a Task 1 or Task 2 essay, Academic or General Training, and it estimates a band for each of the four official criteria, calculates the overall band and quotes your essay line by line with corrections. Verified accounts on a non-disposable email get one free score a day. The result is a practice estimate, not an official IELTS score.
Open this page on a computer to paste and score your essay.
What you get for each essay
- A band from 0 to 9 for Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
- An overall band calculated by the system as the mean of the four criteria, rounded with IELTS half-band rounding.
- Six to fourteen line-by-line annotations that quote your essay word for word, each marked as good, suggestion or error. Errors and suggestions include a fix.
- A "why not the next band" point for each criterion.
- Near-synonyms, high-band vocabulary and topic vocabulary, plus your essay rewritten one band higher with the key changes explained.
- Feedback in any of 11 interface languages. Quotes, corrections and vocabulary words stay in English; explanations use your language.
How to check an essay
- Choose the task and exam type, then paste the question and your essay.
- Sign in and verify your email with a 6-digit code.
- Start the score. It usually takes one to two minutes.
Scoring runs in a desktop browser at least 1024px wide. This page, the guides and the pricing page also work on mobile.
Limits you should know
- The score is an AI estimate against the public band descriptors, not an official IELTS result.
- ieltswrites has not published an accuracy study against certified examiner marks, so it gives no accuracy figure.
- The same essay can score slightly differently between runs. Compare trends across several essays.
- It checks every Task 1 figure only on the Cambridge Academic questions on this site, where it has a transcript of the visual. It does not judge figures in a Task 1 question you paste yourself.

Common questions
- Is this IELTS Writing checker free?
- Partly. Verified accounts get one free AI score a day and one free credit after email verification. Disposable email addresses are not eligible. Extra scores need a credit or a pass, and practising in the exam simulator is free.
- Does it score the four official IELTS criteria?
- Yes. Each criterion is assessed separately against summarised public band descriptors. The criteria are Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
- Does it give line-by-line corrections?
- Yes. Each report has six to fourteen annotations that quote your essay word for word, each marked as good, suggestion or error. Errors and suggestions include a fix.
- How accurate is the band score?
- It is a practice estimate, and ieltswrites gives no accuracy figure because it has not published a study against certified examiner marks. Scores can vary slightly between runs, so use it to compare essays and find repeated errors, not to predict an exact exam band.
- Can ChatGPT mark my IELTS essay instead?
- ChatGPT can give useful feedback, and its result depends on your prompt. ieltswrites applies a fixed process: separate criterion scoring, a calculated overall band and annotations quoted from your essay. It does not claim to be more accurate than ChatGPT.
- Is ieltswrites connected to the official IELTS test?
- No. ieltswrites is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by IELTS, the British Council, IDP or Cambridge.
