AI IELTS Writing Checkers Compared: Free Limits, Prices and Accuracy Evidence
Updated 2026-11-02
A dated comparison of AI IELTS Writing checkers: which tasks each covers, what you get free, what it costs and what accuracy evidence it publishes. Written by ieltswrites, one of the tools listed, with its own limits included.
The short answer
No AI checker gives an official IELTS result, and the best choice depends on what you need. For the cheapest route, use a free tier, or ChatGPT with a careful prompt. If you need Task 1 as well as Task 2, confirm the tool covers it, because some do not. If accuracy matters most, read the published evidence and check who produced the reference scores.
This comparison is written by ieltswrites, which is one of the tools below, so check each tool's own page before you pay. Details come from each tool's public page on 2 November 2026 and can change.
How the tools compare
- ieltswrites: Task 1 and Task 2, Academic and General Training. One free score a day for the 3 days after email verification, on a non-disposable email, which means signing in and verifying first. A free score not used that day expires. Then $0.99 per score, or a 7-day pass at $4.99 or a 30-day pass at $9.99, each up to 10 scores a day. Four criteria with line-by-line corrections, and a 1:1 computer-delivered test simulator. Scoring needs a desktop browser. Publishes a test against 23 examiner-marked sample scripts: average error 1.04 bands, within half a band on 34% of scores, and about two bands too low at band 7.5 and above.
- IELTS International checker: Task 2 only. Up to 3 essays a day with no account. Gives four criteria and one priority fix; the page does not describe sentence-level corrections. Works in mobile browsers. Publishes a test: within half a band for 73% of 55 essays, with reference bands that were not given by certified examiners. Paid prices are not on that page.
- BandNine: Task 1 and Task 2, Academic and General Training. Three free writing scores with no account for the first score; an email is requested for the remaining sentence fixes. Paid from $12 for 15 days or $19 a month. Says it publishes the deviation on a fixed calibration set, and labels its references as in-house, not examiner-marked.
- IELTS Ace: Task 1 and Task 2. One free evaluation per email address, delivered as a link by email, with four criteria and line-by-line fixes. Paid features from $3.99 a week. Its checker page states no accuracy figure.
- Write & Improve: developed by the University of Cambridge and free to use without registering. Results are linked to the CEFR. Its home page does not state an IELTS band score, so use it for general writing feedback and not as a band estimate.
- ChatGPT: any task, using your own prompt. There is no fixed format, so the result depends on your instructions. See the separate guide for a prompt and the research.
How to choose
- On a phone: choose a tool that supports mobile browsers. ieltswrites scoring does not.
- No sign-up: IELTS International or BandNine let you try without an account.
- Practising the computer test: use a simulator without spell check, so your practice conditions match exam day.
- Writing many essays in a short time: compare the cost per essay across passes, and read each daily limit.
- One essay only: start with a free tier. There is no need to pay for a single check.
How to judge accuracy claims
Accuracy figures are not comparable unless the tests are similar. Ask these questions of any tool, including this one.
- Who gave the reference bands? Scores from certified examiners are stronger evidence than bands assigned in-house.
- How many essays were tested, and did they cover low and high bands?
- Was the tool tuned on the same essays it was tested on?
- Is the error reported, and does the tool say where it tends to go wrong?
- A claim with no method behind it tells you little. A tool that publishes its weak spots is easier to trust.
Common questions
- What is the best AI IELTS Writing checker? There is no independent ranking that we can point to. Choose by the tasks you need, the cost of the essays you plan to write and the evidence each tool publishes.
- What is the cheapest way to get IELTS Writing corrections? Free tiers and a carefully prompted ChatGPT cost nothing. Beyond those, compare per-essay prices. ieltswrites costs $0.99 for one score, and a teacher usually costs more but adds human judgment.
- Are AI IELTS checkers accurate? They give estimates, and published tests still show errors of around half a band to a band. No checker can guarantee your exam band.
