Opinions differ on which subjects deserve the most attention at school. Some regard History as one of the most important, while others believe that Science and Technology matter more in the modern world. In my view, although scientific subjects deserve a large share of the timetable, History remains essential and should be a core part of every curriculum.
Those who favour Science and Technology point mainly to the future. The job market increasingly rewards technical skills, and many of the best-paid careers, from engineering to software development and medicine, require a strong scientific background. Governments also depend on innovation to stay economically competitive. Furthermore, every citizen now needs a degree of scientific literacy to make sensible decisions about vaccines, energy use or the security of their personal data. For these reasons, it seems logical to allocate more time to these disciplines.
Nevertheless, History offers something that technical subjects cannot. It explains how present-day borders, institutions and conflicts came about, so students who have studied it are better able to understand the news and the society they live in. Equally importantly, History trains young people to compare sources, recognise bias and question claims, skills which are arguably more necessary than ever now that misinformation spreads so easily online. A student who can write computer code but cannot judge whether a news story is reliable is only partly educated. History also helps to build a sense of cultural identity and reminds each generation of the mistakes it should avoid repeating.
In conclusion, Science and Technology clearly prepare students for the modern economy, and it is reasonable for schools to emphasise them. However, I believe it would be a serious error to treat History as less important, since a well-rounded education needs both technical knowledge and an understanding of the past.
(Task Response)
(Coherence and Cohesion)
