ExampleThis essay and report were written for this page to show the format. They are not a real candidate's work, and AI bands are estimates, not official IELTS results.
Four criteria, weakest first
Each criterion gets a band, what worked, what to improve and why it isn't one band higher.
A mix of simple and complex sentences, with agreement errors in otherwise clear sentences.
Line-by-line notes on your own sentences
Errors come first, then suggestions, then what you did well. Each one quotes your essay and shows the rewrite.
"This" is singular, so the verb needs -s.
After "she", a present-tense verb needs -s.
"For themselves" means through their own experience. "By themselves" only means alone.
no amount of explanation can replace time in the waterA concrete, natural way to support your point about practice.
Your essay, one band higher
Same ideas and structure, rewritten one band higher, so you can see exactly what the next level looks like. The whole essay is rewritten. This is an excerpt.
For example, a medical student must know how the human body works before she treat a patient, because a mistake could have serious results. Without this knowledge, people may copy what others do without knowing the reason behind it, and this make it difficult to solve new problems.
For example, a medical student must understand how the human body functions before treating a patient, because an error could have serious consequences. Without this knowledge, people may simply imitate others without grasping the underlying reasons, which makes it difficult to solve unfamiliar problems.
What changed
- Both agreement errors are gone.
- "Which makes it difficult" joins two ideas into one complex sentence.
- General words give way to precise ones: "serious consequences", "unfamiliar problems".
How you wrote it
Based on how you typed in the exam simulator: when you started, where you paused, what you rewrote and how you used the time. The report also includes a replay of the essay being written.
Where you paused longest
- 18sBetween sentences, at 6:20
- 14sMid-sentence, at 19:05
- 9sMid-word, at 11:30
Words you hesitated on
- treat3 letters deleted · longest pause 9s still wrong
- framework5 letters deleted · longest pause 6s
Next time
Plan for another minute and keep 3 minutes for checking. A common split for Task 2 is plan 3–5 min, write 28–32 min, check 3–5 min (teaching guidance, not an official rule).

Is ieltswrites free?
Yes. Practising IELTS Writing in the simulator is completely free. Verified accounts also get 1 free AI score a day for the 3 days after email verification, and a free score you don't use that day expires. Extra AI scoring is low-cost.
Is it the same as the real IELTS computer-delivered test?
The screen is a 1:1 replica of the computer-based IELTS Writing layout: question on the left, answer box on the right, a live word count and a timer. It is an independent practice tool, not the official test.
How accurate is the AI band score?
It is an estimate, not an official IELTS result. The AI marks your essay against the public IELTS Writing band descriptors on all four criteria and explains every deduction, so you can see exactly what to fix. Use it to track progress between practice tests. Only an IELTS examiner can award an official band.
Can I practise both Task 1 and Task 2?
Yes. Both IELTS Academic and General Training, Task 1 and Task 2.
Can I score my own essay?
Yes. You can paste any question and essay to get an AI band score and corrections, even if you did not write it in the simulator. The writing-process analysis only appears for essays typed in the simulator.
What is different about the computer-delivered IELTS Writing test?
The tasks, timing and marking are the same as the paper test. The difference is that you type: there is an on-screen word counter and you can copy and paste, but there is no spell check or grammar check, so practising on a realistic screen matters.
How many words and how much time do I need for Task 1 and Task 2?
You have 60 minutes for both tasks. Task 1 needs at least 150 words (about 20 minutes) and Task 2 at least 250 words (about 40 minutes). Task 2 counts for twice as much as Task 1 in your Writing band.
Can I use it on my phone?
No. ieltswrites replicates the computer-delivered test and needs a screen at least 1024px wide, so open it on a desktop browser.
How does the AI scoring work?
When you finish, the AI gives an overall band and sub-scores for Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range & Accuracy, plus line-by-line feedback, corrections, synonyms and high-band vocabulary.
How do I check my IELTS essay online for free?
Write your essay in the simulator, or paste a question and essay into the score page, and ask for an AI score. After you verify your email, you get 1 free AI score a day for 3 days. A free score you don't use that day expires.
Is there an IELTS Writing band score calculator?
ieltswrites has no calculator where you type in numbers. It reads your essay and estimates a band for each of the four criteria and an overall band. In the real test, Task 2 counts for twice as much as Task 1.
Your next Task 2 starts when you press start.
Practice is free. Verify your email for 1 free AI score a day for 3 days; a free score you don't use that day expires.
