To what extent do you agree with this opinion 和 How important do you think it is for children to play as well as learn。

It is sometimes argued that primary schools concentrate too heavily on formal learning. I largely agree with this view, and I believe that play is an essential part of the primary classroom, provided it is combined with structured teaching rather than replacing it.
There is considerable evidence that formal learning now dominates primary education in many countries. Because schools are judged by standardised test results and league tables, teachers are under pressure to spend more time preparing pupils for exams and less time on practical or creative activities. Parents, too, often equate early reading and arithmetic with success. As a result, children as young as five may spend long periods sitting at desks completing worksheets, which can exhaust their limited attention span and turn learning into a source of anxiety. It is worth noting that Finland, where formal schooling does not begin until the age of seven and lessons are broken up by frequent periods of play, still achieves excellent educational outcomes.
In my view, giving children time to play in the classroom is extremely important. Playing with others teaches young children to share, take turns and resolve disagreements, skills that underpin both their social development and their ability to work in groups later on. Play-based activities can also make abstract ideas concrete: a pretend shop, for instance, allows pupils to practise adding up prices and giving change in a way that is far more memorable than a page of sums. This is not to say that play should replace formal instruction, since skills such as reading and writing require systematic teaching, especially for older primary pupils.
In conclusion, I agree that many primary schools place too much emphasis on formal learning. Play should be a regular, carefully planned feature of the classroom, because children learn most effectively when structured lessons and purposeful play work together.
