You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely. Discuss both these view and give your own opinion. Write at least 250 words.

- as much information as possible

Opinions differ on whether knowledge in research, business and academia should be made as widely available as possible or whether some of it is too important or valuable to be released freely. In my view, openness should be the default, but limited restrictions are justified for reasons of safety and investment.
Those who support sharing argue that progress depends on it. Scientists and academics build on earlier findings, so when results are published openly, others can test them, avoid duplication of effort and move forward more quickly. A striking example came in early 2020, when the genetic sequence of the Covid-19 virus was released worldwide within weeks, allowing laboratories in many countries to start work on vaccines almost immediately. Moreover, much research is publicly funded, and it seems only fair that taxpayers should have access to what they have paid for.
On the other hand, there are two strong reasons for keeping some information private. Firstly, certain knowledge, such as techniques for creating dangerous pathogens or weapons, could cause enormous harm if it fell into the wrong hands. Secondly, businesses invest vast sums in developing new products, and they need to protect their intellectual property in order to recoup that investment. A pharmaceutical company that spends a decade developing a medicine would have little incentive to do so if competitors could copy the formula the next day.
In conclusion, I believe that information should be shared freely wherever possible, because collective knowledge benefits everyone. However, exceptions are reasonable when disclosure would threaten public safety, and patents offer a sensible compromise in business, since inventions are published while their commercial value is protected for a limited period.
(Task Response)
(Coherence and Cohesion)
(Lexical Resource)
- build on earlier findings、recoup their investment、intellectual property、fall into the wrong hands
(Grammatical Range and Accuracy)
